My First BOOPPPS Lesson Plan

Mafia Lesson Plan (10 mins)
Bridge: 1 min
-Mafia is a game that can be played with high school students, and can be used for:
  • subbing (if you need a time-filler)
  • a fun game for students to play if there is extra time in class
  • a reward
-Mafia requires no materials, is easy to set up and is flexible in length
Teaching Objectives:
-engage all students in learning the game
-explain all rules in a clear concise manner to avoid confusion

Learning Objectives:
-be able to play and lead a game of Mafia
-be able to make modifications to the game to suit specific needs
Pre-Test: 30 sec
-ask if anyone has played Mafia before
Participatory: 6 mins
-play a mini-game of Mafia to model how it should run (4 mins)
  • Start with a sample game where there are no extra characters, only Mafia Members. I will lead this round of the game and explain the objectives of the game as we go along. Students will play one practice round like this, quickly bring someone to trial and vote.
-explain the add-ons to the game: Doctor, Detective, etc. (2 mins)
Post-Test: 2 mins
-have one student lead the beginning of the game (picking the mafia, doctor, detective and setting up the game) while other students help him/her remember rules when needed.
Summary: 30 sec
-learned a game that high school students usually like
-long game that takes > 30 mins to play
